HANNAH MAZEY

I got the chance to speak to Hannah Mazey before her sold out show at Jacaranda Records in Liverpool. Playing such an iconic venue, it was great to chat with Hannah during her pre-show high (and likely nerves!) Hannah is an up-and-coming artist from Wigan, who played the Cavern Club with BBC Introducing in late 2024. Since then, she has sold out the Jacaranda and has an upcoming gig at the deaf institute in Manchester.

Can you give me an intro about yourself and your music?

“I’m from a little town called Wigan, which is in the middle of Manchester and lIverpool. So, at the moment I have been performing with my band since August 2024, but I’ve been performing on my own, acoustically for a few years now”.

“The kind of music that we do is indie pop/indie rock, but we try and delve into different genres, so it’s a bit of a mix really”.

What do you get up to outside of music?

“So I have a full time job, so I have to kind of balance that along with gigging at the weekend, which can be stressful at times, but I enjoy my job – I work in marketing as well so that really helps me out on the musical promotion side of things because I can really tap into that”. So I just have a normal 9-5 job really”.

Who are your biggest influences?

“I was having a conversation the other day about this, and I was talking to my guitarist, Tommy, it doesn’t necessarily have an artist in mind that inspires it, or a type of music that inspires it. I start off with the bare bones of a track, where I’ll write lyrics first, along with a melody on guitar, and then everything else comes along after that. So I don’t have any specific inspirations really, it’s difficult to pin it down – I think it’s just life that inspires me”.

“But one artist that I remember as a kid growing up who really got me listening properly to lyrics was Ed Sheeran actually. His first album that came out, I remember that was the first album that I listened to all the way through, and actually listened to the lyrics. But I feel like I get more inspired by lyrics than the actual music. I listen more to the words and the meaning of the song”.

What is the biggest milestone in your career?

“So far, I’d probably say the Cavern Club. It was with BBC Introducing as well so that was a really big thing and it felt like I was being noticed – and it was one of the best gigs that we’ve done so far, it was really fun”.

“Obviously tonight is a huge milestone as well, [playing at the Jacaranda in Liverpool to a sold out crowd]”.

What would be your dream festival or dream venue?

“Oh right, okay! I’m going to go for sort of realistic…”

No, don’t!

“Well then, obviously Glastonbury, you’re not going to say no to Glastonbury. But I’d probably say Manchester Academy or New Century Hall. Those are venues where you know, as a smaller artist, that you’re stepping up”.

If you could collaborate with anybody in the world, who would you collaborate with?

“Role model! He’s quite country and his album has been on repeat for me for the past year. But to go for someone a bit more out there, I don’t know if this would even work but Tyler the Creator. I just want to meet him to be honest and hang out with him!”

Who’s going to be in your Spotify Wrapped?

“Role Model, Tyler the Creator, Barstaff and Lola Young”.
